Zakarpattia National Nature Park preserves the rich biodiversity and scenic landscapes of the Carpathian Mountains’ foothills, offering visitors pristine forests, diverse wildlife, and cultural heritage in western Ukraine.
Zakarpattia National Nature Park is located in the southwestern part of Ukraine in the Zakarpattia Oblast, along the northern foothills of the Eastern Carpathians. The park encompasses mixed mountain forests, alpine meadows, river gorges, and karst landscapes that host a rich variety of plant and animal species, some endemic and rare. Its unique geographical position at the intersection of different climatic and ecological zones fosters a high degree of biodiversity, including over a thousand species of vascular plants and numerous mammals, birds, and insects. The park serves as an important refuge for large mammals such as brown bears, wolves, and lynx as well as for rare plant species like the Edelweiss and various orchids. Established in 1999, Zakarpattia National Nature Park promotes environmental conservation while enabling sustainable tourism with opportunities for hiking, wildlife watching, photography, and guided nature tours. Visitors can explore well-marked trails that traverse spruce and beech forests, alongside scenic viewpoints overlooking winding river valleys and traditional Carpathian villages nearby. The area is rich not only in natural beauty but also in cultural heritage, featuring traditional Hutsul crafts and architecture. In addition to recreating outdoors, visitors often engage in birdwatching, mushroom foraging, and learning about the local flora and fauna through educational programs. The park's intact ecosystems and tranquil atmosphere make it a premier destination for nature lovers seeking both adventure and relaxation in the heart of the Carpathians.
